The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday are Grossmont College basketball player Tim Patrick and San Diego Miramar basketball player Jeremiah Townes.

Patrick, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward out of University City High School who also is a standout receiver for the Griffins in football,

had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists last Monday as Grossmont defeated Cypress 87-75 in the third-place game of the Mesa/Holiday Inn Tournament hosted Mesa.

He contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals against the Chargers.

Patrick, coming off the bench as he continues to adjust from football, sparked the G-House with 38 points, 27 rebounds and seven blocks as the Griffins went 2-1 in the tournament.

“His versatility makes him such a valuable player,” Grossmont coach Doug Weber said. “He defended guards and in the post and scored with inside play, as well as hitting (3-pointers).”

Townes has sparked Miramar after stints at Beachwood High School in suburban Cleveland, OH, one semester playing for the NAIA’s Mount Vernon University, then one season at Spire Institute (OH) Prep and one semester at NCAA Division III John Carroll University.

On Saturday, he helped the Jets to a 77-66 non-conference victory over Moorpark at home with 15 points and 12 rebounds. This came after he had 14 points and had five rebounds in a 73-67 loss to Pasadena City College to begin the Imperial Valley College Holiday Classic, came back with 19 points and six rebounds in a 65-64 win over Barstow in the consolation semifinals, then tallied eight points and also had eight rebounds in the consolation finals, a 63-58 win vs. Cuyamaca.

Honorable mention went to San Diego Mesa basketball player Novian Cherry, the PCAC Athlete of the Week back on Nov. 10, and Mesa basketball player Darreon Toliver.

Cherry, a 6-foot-4 freshman guard from Morse High School who shared Athlete of the Week honors back on Nov. 10, had 21 points and four assists in an 84-73 loss to Glendale in the championship game of the Mesa/Holiday Inn Tournament to begin the week last Monday. He then exploded for 49 points, eight boards and four steals in a 114-102 win vs. Barstow on Saturday.

Toliver, a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward from Morse and a transfer from Frank Phillips Junior College in Texas, had 13 rebounds vs. Glendale and 19 points and 18 rebounds vs. Barstow.
