2019-20 Male Athlete of the Year: Sirex Vasquez
May 5, 2020
Congratulations to Sirex Vasquez, selected as the 2019-20 San Diego Miramar College Male Athlete of the Year!
A little about Rex:
Rex is a three-year member of the Miramar MVB program. His first year was cut short by a season-ending injury. He came back in his second season to start every match at outside hitter, took the most swings (223), finishing the season as the team's second leading scorer (93 points), second best passer at 2.21 (2.00 is the standard), team leader in aces (29), and second in digs with 62. For the 2020 season, Rex was the team captain for the state #5 ranked Jets. He was the team's Swiss Army knife, playing as an outside hitter, setter, libero and primarily as a serving specialist. The role of a serving specialist is hard; you seldom start, nor do you play much, as the player you serve for usually subs back in immediately after you're done serving. Yet Rex was so good in this role (we scored regularly and often when he served), he was kept in the role. And true to his role as team captain, he never complained about his job, and became the Jets' main off-court cheerleader when he wasn't playing. Even in a reduced playing role and missing a match for an SDSU interview, Rex was second on the team in serving aces (11), 4th best in digs (33), and 3rd best passer at 2.24 (better than 2019). It is a shame that his fine season was ended by the CCCAA Spring sports cancellation after only 9 matches. Off campus, Rex is a shift manager at Chick-Fil-A Mira Mesa, working 25-40 hours a week depending on school commitments. He is also very involved with his church, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, where he sings for the choir, is an alter server, usher, and volunteers for community events happening at the church. Due to his solid work in the classroom (3.10 GPA over 80 units, with another 13 in progress), and his great work in Miramar's Athletic Training Room with Jets trainers Tosh Tepraseuth & Jenn Carranza, Rex will transfer next Fall into the esteemed, impacted Athletic Training program at San Diego State. He is a fine representative of the Miramar men's volleyball program.
Congratulations Rex!
Go Jets!
